The National Institute for Educational Planning and Administration (NIEPA), Ondo has joined the United Nations to commemorate this year’s International Day of Education. Education is a human right, a public good and a public responsibility. Speaking at the Institute’s corporate headquarters in Ondo City, Ondo State yesterday, the Director General and Chief Executive of NIEPA said this year’s International Day of Education 2023 aims “to invest in people and prioritize education”.

Professor Jagusah while speaking with newsmen said NIEPA is a product of the collaboration of the Government of Nigeria with UNESCO-IIEP in Paris which is a specialized agency of the United Nations. This, according to him warrants that NIEPA actively participates in UN activities that are geared towards the enhancement and development of education, especially in Nigeria and the sub-African region. He further said that this year’s Internal Education Day would not be filled with activities but has been designed to re-echo the importance of education in society.

“Education has a manifold impact on society, from raising the quality of life to creating conditions conducive to the development of talented individuals capable of changing society. The importance of education in society lies in the fact that it creates opportunities for acquiring knowledge and skills that are changing the world” … he said.

Jagusah added that UNESCO is dedicating this year’s International Day to girls and women in Afghanistan who have been deprived of their right to education. It is calling for the immediate lifting of the ban restricting their access to education. Education must be prioritized to accelerate progress towards all the Sustainable Development Goals against the backdrop of a global recession, growing inequalities and the climate crisis. Their right to education is being violated and it is unacceptable. It is time to transform education.

The United Nations General Assembly proclaimed 24 January as the International Day of Education, in celebration of the role of education in peace and development.
