NIEPA TRAINS PRINCIPALS OF SCHOOLS OF FCT UBEB ON EFFECTIVE SCHOOL MANAGEMENT USING COLLABORATIVE PROBLEM SOLVING.

A 3 day workshop on Effective School Management using Collaborative Problem Solving Approach, for Principals of Secondary Schools, organized by Universal Basic Education Board (UBEB), FCT Abuja, in collaboration with National Institute for Educational Planning and Administration (NIEPA Nigeria), Ondo.

The Director General/ CE NIEPA, Prof Lilian I Salami, in her opening remark welcomed the participants to the workshop. She thanked the Chairman FCT UBEB Dr. Kabiru Ibrahim Matazu for considering NIEPA worthy of organizing the capacity development workshop.

Speaking further, Salami said that the National Institute for Educational Planning and Administration as a capacity building outfit, has made significant progress in capacity building of education planners and managers in conjunction with local and international partners.

NIEPA boss added that, education in Nigeria, has struggled to find its balance since independence.

The state of educational system, particularly, the basic and post basic education has been increasingly, an outcry, despite the huge investment by government and development partners on the sector.

Prof. Lilian salami listed some of the ills that bedeviled the system, which include:

Absenteeism, indiscipline, poor attitude to work, lack of cordial relationship among the school authority, staff, the community, SMBC, PTA and child’s rape amongst other related problems.

However, it has also been observed that one of the factors that has been militating against getting value for money on education amongst others, is majorly skills’ gap that predominates school heads, which is vital for proper running and administration of the school in this 21st century. The significance of collaborative problem solving in school management and administration is very essential because it involves critical thinking, communication and solid skills among stakeholders, by proffering solution to organizational problems that range from conflict management, addressing social vices amongst others and helps them to develop a better understanding of emerging issues in education.

Assistant Director training, FCT UBEB Abuja, Mr Danladi Aliyu urged the participants to take full advantage of the workshop and also thanked NIEPA Nigeria,Ondo for organising such a workshop at this crucial time of our educational system in Nigeria.

Mr Danladi Aliyu however stated that the reason that this capacity building programme is organized is to improve the skills of school heads of FCT UBEB to effectively manage their respective schools, for improved educational output.

Objectives of the workshop are:

At the end of the workshop, participants were able to;

  • explain Principles of School Management;
  • identify the characteristics of a good Administrator;
  • outline the qualities of a good Administrator;
  • list the management techniques in school administration and;
  • state the functions of a good administrator.
