The Office of The Senior Special Assistant to The President (OSSAP) on SDGs in conjunction with Federal Ministry of Education, Abuja organized a 5-day National Training programme for Principals of Junior Secondary Schools and Headteachers of Public Primary Schools from the South West and North Central states in Nigeria. The workshop which was held between 14th and 18th of September, 2020 was facilitated by the National Institute for Educational Planning and Administration, (NIEPA), Ondo.
Speaking at the opening ceremony at Ilorin the Kwara State capital, the Director General and Chief Executive Officer of NIEPA, Professor Olivet Jagusah mni represented by the Head, Training department of the Institute, Dr Sunday Adegbesan, welcomed all dignitaries, resource persons and participants to the 5-day workshop. He informed participants that the programme was organized under the supervision of OSSAP-SDGs in conjunction with the Federal Ministry of Education, Abuja. Dr. Adegbesan stated that the programme would help to broaden the participants knowledge scope on school management, school planning and administration. While recognizing the importance of school management, he added that participants know how would also be developed on classroom management, work ethics and achieving a greater change in behavioral attitude to school management by teachers, community, government and all education stakeholders. He advised participants to be focused and committed throughout the workshop as participants would be administered pre and post-test before and after the programme.
The Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Education, Arch. Sunny Echono, represented by Mrs. Gameja Rebecca from the FME-SDGs office, appreciated OSSAP-SDGs and the Director-General NIEPA for seeing the workshop plans to fruition. She informed participants that the SDGs 4 capacity building workshops over the years and now have aimed at educating on whole school management. The FME representative added that the programme would be helpful in developing participants knowledge on how community, government and all stakeholders can encourage education development in terms of facilities maintenance, skills development and infrastructural development.
Other personalities who spoke at the ceremony include NIEPA’s Desk Officer at the Department of Education, Planning, Research and Development in the Federal Ministry of Education, Mr. Patrick Osonameh and the Director, Planning, Research and Statistics, Ministry of Education and Human Capital Development, Kwara State, Dr. Mrs. Balogun. They also advised the participants to cooperate with the resource persons and other staff throughout the programme duration.
Speaking on behalf of the participants at the end of the 5-day workshop, Principal, Queen Elizabeth Secondary School, Ilorin Kwara State, Mrs. Sidikat Lawal and Principal, Ijebu-Igbo Girls Grammar School, Ogun State, Mrs. Obasan Olufolake Yetunde appreciated NIEPA, FME and OSSAP for organizing the workshop and assured that now that they are better enlightened, they would put into practice all they have learnt on School Management and help achieve the mandate of the Institute and objectives of SDGs 4 and FME.
