In line with NIEPA’s continued efforts to promote research quality and global visibility of academic staff in the Nigerian Educational System, the Federal Ministry of Education (FME), Abuja in collaboration with the National Institute for Educational Planning and Administration (NIEPA NIGERIA), Ondo, organized a Nation-wide workshop on “Strengthening of Academic Staff on Educational Sector Planning”. The workshop was held from Monday 1st to Friday 5th November 2021 at the corporate headquarters of NIEPA NIGERIA in Ondo City. The workshop aimed to train academic staff within Research and Allied Institutions on the required knowledge, skills, and nuances of the Education Sector Plan (ESP).

Speaking on behalf of Professor Olivet Jagusah, the Director-General/CEO of NIEPA, Dr. Sunday Adegbesan said that “An Education Sector Plan (ESP) is by nature a national policy instrument, elaborated under the responsibility of government, which provides a long-term vision for the education system in the country, and outlines a coherent set of practicable strategies to reach its objectives and overcome difficulties”. He remarked that educational planning has become very important because it makes sure an institution’s success, considers the significant issues, constraints, conditions, and factors of education.Adegbesan elaborated that the workshop will cover areas such as Education Sector Analysis, Prioritization process in Educational Planning, Drafting and finalizing State Education strategy plan, Operational Planning, Tracking and Reporting section plan implementation, and Drafting and finalizing medium terms base education sector strategic plan (MTBESP). Adegbesan added that this will in turn lead to the production of these plans from elementary stage to draft and finalization stage.

Dr. Adegbesan concluded by saying that proper knowledge of preparing an Education Sector Plan would not only enhance the career development of academics but would ultimately position the country’s education system to attain global relevance in terms of the quality and quantum of its institutions.
